onebox.com has a unified inbox where you can receive your e-mail, voicemail and faxes. The closest location to Lexington, KY, where onebox.com has local numbers is Cincinnati; however, reports are that the network is expanding fairly quickly.

excite.com also has a free unified inbox for e-mail and voicemail, but not faxes (see callwave.com, below). Excite's service is nationwide.

hotmail.com is one of many websites that offers free, web-based e-mail, along with e-mail subscriptions to such great tech magazines as Wired. Hotmail also lets you check your regular (POP) e-mail account. But beware security issues encountered at hotmail.com.

The service uses a browser plug-in, so there is no need to manually install any software. It's a good idea to get a good headset with a microphone, or an actual Internet phone handset.

Phone Free allows you to make PC-to-phone or PC-to-PC long-distance calls for free. This service does require installation of software.

INTERNET FAXING
fax4free.com allows you to send faxes (up to ten pages per fax) through your Web browser for free. Premium/pay services also available.

callwave.com has a couple of free services:

  1. a free fax number that sends faxes to the e-mail address you specify
    • your fax callers will likely have to dial a long-distance call, but it's free to you

  2. a free Internet answering machine that answers your calls and lets you listen to the messages while you're online
    • you'll have to have call-forward-on-busy service for this to work
    • the call-forward number is a toll-free number

INTERNET SERVICE
netzero.net offers free Internet access, with web-based e-mail, to those who don't mind the trade-off of having to look at advertising. There is a local Lexington, KY, access number.
